Frequently Asked Questions

About the opportunity

1) What is The Outdoor Room Company?

A New Zealand–owned brand specialising in premium outdoor living solutions, including louvre and flat roofs, glazed roofs, outdoor blinds, shutters, ground-level decking and aluminium fencing. We currently operate in Northland (HQ), Waikato, Taranaki, Manawatū-Whanganui and Wellington.

2) How is the franchise structured?

You own and operate your own company and are licensed to use TORC’s brand, systems and intellectual property under the Franchise Agreement and current Manuals.

3) Is this home-based?

Yes. Franchisees operate from a home office with a secure storage facility for materials and tools, and one or more branded vehicles.

4) Do I need to be a builder or hold trade qualifications?

Useful but not essential. You must be practically minded, safety-focused, and willing to follow TORC’s installation and quality standards. Where specialist licences or consents are required, these must be complied with.

Territories and market

5) Are territories exclusive?

Yes—each franchise operates within an exclusive, mapped territory. Cross-boundary service and lead handling are governed by the Franchise Agreement and Manuals.

6) Which territories are available?

We are expanding nationwide, with priority regions open now (including multi-territory opportunities in major centres). Enquire with your region and we will confirm availability.

7) Can I hold more than one territory?

Subject to performance, capacity, and franchisor approval, multi-territory arrangements may be considered.

Day-to-day operations

8) What does a typical day involve?

In-home consultations, design and quoting, ordering materials, scheduling installers, supervising works to TORC standards, customer handovers, and proactive territory development.

9) Do I have to do the installations myself?

Many owners start hands-on, then transition to supervising a small team and/or approved contractors as volume grows. All work must meet TORC standards and Health & Safety requirements.

10) Do I need a showroom?

No. Our model is mobile and consultative. A professional home office and compliant secure storage are required.

11) What equipment and vehicles are needed?

A suitable branded van/ute, standard trade tools and PPE, and secure storage. A detailed set-up list is provided in the Information Pack.

Training, support and systems

12) What training do you provide?

Initial training covers brand, systems, product knowledge and quoting, practical installation, and Health & Safety. Competency is assessed before operating independently.

13) What support do I receive after launch?

Field visits, performance reviews, KPI/benchmarking, supplier onboarding, updated Manuals, and access to templates and tools. Additional training is provided as products and systems evolve.

14) Which systems and software will I use?

You will be onboarded to an approved toolkit for CRM/workflow, collaboration, document templates and H&S registers. Platform selections may change over time; franchisees must maintain required subscriptions.

Marketing and lead flow

15) Do you provide leads?

TORC runs national brand marketing and provides brand assets and guidance. Franchisees are responsible for proactive local marketing within brand guidelines to build a sustainable pipeline.

16) Do you help with local launch marketing?

Yes. We provide a structured launch plan and materials and review performance regularly.

17) Can I market outside my territory?

Marketing must target your territory unless expressly approved. Cross-boundary enquiries are managed per the Manuals.

Investment, fees and income

18) What does the initial investment include?

The franchise licence, initial training and launch support. Set-up costs usually include vehicle branding, tools/equipment, secure storage, initial marketing and insurances. A detailed schedule is provided in the Information Pack.

19) What ongoing fees apply?

Franchise service fees and, where applicable, a marketing contribution—defined in the Franchise Agreement. The Information Pack outlines inclusions and how these support network services.

20) What could I earn? (Income indicator)

We do not publish earnings figures on the website. TORC is a high-ticket, project-based model where income is driven by average project value, gross margin and install capacity, supported by close rate and pipeline quality. We provide illustrative income scenarios and sensitivity tables in the Information Pack to support due diligence. Business performance depends on your execution, local market conditions and costs; no earnings are guaranteed.

21) Is finance available?

Any finance is at the discretion of lenders. We can outline typical set-up items and timing so you can discuss options with your bank or adviser.

22) How much working capital do I need?

This varies by region, supplier terms and growth rate. Guidelines and cash-flow timing are included in the Information Pack.

Compliance, quality and safety

23) What are my Health & Safety obligations?

You must implement TORC’s H&S systems (RAMS, training records, incident reporting) and comply with all legal duties. This is a condition of operating.

24) Who manages consents and council requirements?

TORC provides product and process guidance; franchisees remain responsible for ensuring compliance with any local regulatory requirements for each job.

25) What warranties apply?

Product and workmanship warranties are handled per TORC policy and supplier terms. You’ll be trained on documentation and customer communication at handover.

People, capacity and growth

26) How many people do I need at the start?

Most franchisees begin as owner-operators, then add an installer and/or contractors as demand grows. We provide role profiles and recruitment guidance.

27) Can I scale to crews?

Yes—subject to demand, quality and safety standards, and your capacity to supervise work.

28) What hours will I work?

You manage your schedule, noting that customer consultations often include late afternoons or Saturdays. Installations occur during standard site hours, subject to weather.

29) How seasonal is demand?

Sales and installation activity can be influenced by weather and holiday periods; your pipeline, scheduling and marketing cadence are designed to smooth this where practical.

Products and suppliers

30) Which products will I sell and install?

Approved ranges include shaded roofs, louvre roofs, glazed roofs, outdoor blinds, outdoor shutters and ground-level decking. Specifications, brand standards and purchasing protocols are covered in training and the Manuals.

31) Can I add other products?

Only with franchisor approval to protect brand standards, safety and supply integrity.

32) How are materials purchased?

Through approved suppliers and ordering processes. Lead times and logistics are addressed in the Information Pack.

The Franchise Agreement (and any ancillary deeds) and the current Franchisee Manuals (Operations and Management). These documents are updated from time to time; the Agreement prevails.

36) What is the term, renewal and transfer policy?

Set out in the Franchise Agreement. We provide a plain-English summary in the Information Pack, and you should obtain independent legal advice.

37) Can I sell my franchise?
